Common Zuni Fetish Carvings and their Meanings

Zuni fetishes are hand carved "animal totems" from the Zuni tribe in western New Mexico. They are an ancient practice of Zuni spirituality, used by the A:Shiwi (The People) for over a thousand years. In Zuni culture, a fetish is a small, carefully carved animal or figure that embodies the spirit of the animal or natural force it represents. These carvings are believed to hold special powers and are used in various rituals, ceremonies, and as protective talismans. The Zuni people believe that each fetish carries its own unique set of attributes and can aid or impart these qualities to those who carry them, such as providing guidance, protection, or healing. Each Zuni fetish has a different meaning and is used for different purposes. Originally fetishes were found objects that looked like animals, and overtime, the carving became more detailed. Today, fetishes have moved beyond their traditional forms and can be found in increasing variety.

    Hello Regina!

What a wonderful, mysterious experience you’re having with your fetish! Paul and I were chosen by a very special tuxedo cat we named Sugar. She lived 20 fabulous years with us, and died in our arms just one day before her 21st birthday. We were devastated – no – more than devistated! Sugar knew I had cancer before we did. She would crawl up onto me and just stare into my eyes without blinking. Sure enough, she was right, and she was our nurse cat every day of the year of my treatments. By the way, yesterday my oncologist and I celebrated the 20th anniversary of the two of us working hard to keep me alive after a diagnosis of terminal cancer in 2005.

So, we moped around for a long time. We feed several outside kitties, and along the way, we’ve given them names. One was Outside Kitty, which we shortened to OK. Others we called Orange Cat, Scaredy Stripey, and Petrie. None of them ever had any interest in coming inside.

A couple of months after Sugar left us, we were at the front door, feeding the outsiders. Suddenly, OK muscled her way past the two of us. She sauntered over to the living room, and plopped down on the floor as if to announce, “I’m home.” Like Sugar, she was a very mellow kitty, and we cherish every day we had with her.

When I shared the story with friends, some of them said that Sugar knew how much we missed her, and so she sent OK to help heal our hearts. At first, I thought that was just silly, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made to me. It was exactly the kind of thing that Sugar would do if she could. After much thought, I decided I was all right with however OK came to live with us. Either Sugar sent her, or she didn’t. Either way, it’s wonderful.

I love that we live in a gorgeous Universe where mysterious things happen every day. If we knew everything about everything, it would be boring. May you have many more happy years with your fetish!

    Happy Holidays!

    Cherie

I inherited some native American fetishes one of them appeared to be made out of some kind of clay.. It has no indication of who made this. It is a bear fetish. The sand color has swiggly black lines on it. And has a bar of etchings cut into it. .I am uncomfortable with what I want to say next. When I placed it on the shelf. Over time since Christmas, it has moved a total of 3 times on its own. I took a white art pencil and drew a line around the fetish where I placed it on the shelf. No indication of it moving again. However I saw a small gray mass leaving the fetish and vanish. Was this a vessel for a spirit? Any idea who made it.?
